Borussia Dortmund's attacking midfielder Marco Reus will leave the club at the end of the season after the two sides reached a mutual agreement not to extend his contract, he has revealed.
The 34-year-old Reus, who joined Borussia in 2012 and spent ten years as part of the club's academy, scored 168 goals and provided 128 assists in 424 appearances for the Dortmund side. Reus captained the team for five years until 2023. With Borussia, Reus is a two-time German Cup winner, but failed to become win the Bundesliga after last campaign Dortmund missed out on the title on the final day of the season. However, the footballer has the opportunity to leave Signal Iduna Park with a Champions League triumph, where the Yellow and Blacks have a one-goal lead after the first semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
"The club and I have decided not to extend the contract. I have spent more than half of my life at this club. I am proud and happy to have played so many years here. I have no words. It is important that you, the fans, understand first and because of this, that we still have a big goal in front of us. We want to go to Wembley (for the Champions League final) and bring the trophy back to Dortmund", Reus said in a video statement.
The team travel to France for the second leg on Tuesday, hoping to reach a first final in the competition since 2013. Dortmund won their only trophy so far in 1997. Borussia are currently in fifth position in the Bundesliga with three rounds remaining. /BGNES
