Manchester United has fired its manager Erik ten Haag, the Red Devils announced.
The Dutchman leaves Old Trafford after a series of disappointing results. The team has just one win in their last eight matches in all competitions and in the last round of the Premier League they lost dramatically to West Ham 1:2 after a late goal from a controversial penalty by Jarrod Bowen.
"Erik ten Hag has left his position as Manchester United's first team manager. Eric was appointed in April 2022 and has led the team to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Eric for everything he has done for us during his time here and we wish him all the best in future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team on an interim basis, alongside the current coaching staff, until a new permanent manager is appointed", a club statement said.
The 54-year-old Ten Hag has long enjoyed a credit of confidence from the club's owners INEOS, even renewing his contract in the summer until 2026, but United's early season results have cost him the job. Manchester are only 14th in the Premiership, having already lost four in nine games. In the Europa League, the Red Devils started with three consecutive draws.
Among the options to succeed the Dutchman, who arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax, is former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez. | BGNES
