French President Emmanuel Macron has said he will finish his term, which expires in May 2027, regardless of what happens in early parliamentary elections, AFP reported.
Macron added that the future government will reflect the vote of all republicans who "will have shown the courage to oppose the extremes".
Polls indicate that Marine Le Pen's far-right will come out on top in the early vote, the first round of which is scheduled for June 30.
Le Pen said Macron's resignation could be the only solution to avoid a hung parliament for the remaining three years of his term.
The president surprised the country by dissolving parliament after the far-right defeated his Renaissance party in European Parliament elections earlier in June.
"You can trust me that until May 2027 I will act as your president who at all times defends our republic, our values, respects pluralism and your choice, serves you and the nation," Macron said.
He insisted that the upcoming vote, with a second round on July 7, is "neither a presidential election nor a vote of confidence in the president of the republic", but an answer to "a single question: who will govern France?".
Macron admitted that his decision to call early elections had angered some voters, who turned against him. | BGNES
