"I am fully prepared to recognize a Palestinian state."
This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Anadolu Agency reported.
"There are no taboos for France and I am completely ready to recognize the Palestinian state... I think this recognition should come at a useful time," Macron added.
Macron said there are no double standards regarding civilians suffering in conflicts in different parts of the world.
He described the situation in Rafah as "horrendous" and added that operations in the southern city must stop.
The French president reiterated that Israel has the right to defend itself, but noted that this must be done in compliance with international and humanitarian law.
However, he said there is no safe place for Palestinian civilians.
"We support Algeria's request for an emergency meeting at the UN and are working with Algeria and all our partners in the Security Council for a joint resolution that will not only address the humanitarian emergency on the ground, but also provide answers regarding the ceasefire and will give a clear mandate to the UN for Gaza," Macron explained.
