French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Prime Minister Gabriel Atal to remain in office "for the time being to ensure the stability of the country", the presidency said.
Macron "thanked him for leading the campaigns" of his centrist alliance for the European and parliamentary elections, the statement said, AFP reported.
The resignation also comes just weeks before the start of the Paris Olympics, which are an important demonstration of France's position on the world stage.
In the French parliamentary elections, Macron's centrist alliance came in second place behind the left-wing New People's Front (NNF) alliance. The results were a major disappointment for Marine Le Pen's far-right National Assembly (NA). The right-hander took first place in the first round. | BGNES
