French President Emmanuel Macron awarded 11 American veterans who participated in the Normandy landings in June 1944, the DPA agency reported.
The fighters were awarded France's highest decoration, the Legion of Honor, during the 80th anniversary celebrations of D-Day.
"You came here because the free world needed each one of you and you responded to the call. You came here to make France a free nation," Macron said.
The men now range in age from 98 to 104.
The French president kissed each veteran on both cheeks and congratulated them warmly as he pinned the medals on their lapels. | BGNES
