Ludogorets' striker scores historic goal to lead Switzerland past Hungary

Switzerland beat Hungary 3:1 in a Group A match at the European Football Championship. At the Cologne Stadium, Ludogorets striker Kwadwo Duah scored a historic goal to lead the "Crusaders" to an important win on the way to a possible qualification for the eliminations of the tournament.

The Swiss started more confidently and actively in the opening minutes and naturally their good play was rewarded with a goal in the 12th minute. Michel Aebischer played a wonderful pass behind the Magyars' defence, setting up Ludogorets striker Kwadvo Duah, who beat Peter Gulacsi for 1:0. Duah's goal was initially disallowed for offside, but replays made it clear he was in a regular position. The goal was counted and is historic, as it was the first time a player from the Bulgaria's league scored a goal in the European finals. Murat Yakin's side continued to press the Hungarians and rarely gave them opportunities to look at Jann Sommer's goal. It wasn't until the end of the first half that Switzerland's pressure paid off and one of the best on the pitch, Aebischer got his name on the scoresheet as well, scoring with a measured shot from outside the penalty area.

After the break, Marco Rossi's men took the game forward and looked bolder at Sommer's goal. Barnabas Varga made a big miss in the 62nd minute when he was left alone in close proximity to Switzerland's goal, but his header went wide. Soon after, however, Varga fought off an opponent and capitalized on a trademark cross from Dominik Szoboszlai, who also made history today by becoming the youngest captain in a European championship at the age of 23. Hungary tried to equalize, but in the closing minutes they were seriously exposed in defense and were fatally punished during one of the opponent's counter-attacks. Breel Embolo, who entered from the bench, overcame Gulachi for the final 3:1.

Switzerland are level at the top of Group A with hosts Germany, who thrashed Scotland 5:1 in their opening game yesterday. In the next round of matches, the "Crusaders" play against Scotland, and the Hungarians face the Bundesteam. | BGNES
