Irishman Shane Lawrie took the sole lead after the second day of the 152nd edition of The Open - one of the four major golf tournaments. Lawrie, who won the event five years ago, was solid in the very strong wind at Royal Troon, Scotland, and shot a 69 after a superb 66 on day one.
So he is seven shots under par after the second round and has a two-shot lead over England's Dan Brown and Justin Rose. Brown recorded a historic achievement after leading the leaderboard after the first day in his debut major appearance. He continued to be on par on Friday to remain at -5 as Rose, who also made it through qualifying, chases a second Big Four title. World No. 1 Scotty Scheffler, who is in excellent form, is five strokes off the top spot.
The tough conditions ate at the heads of some of the leading golfers. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods failed to enter the corner and are eliminated from the tournament. The same goes for Bryson DeChambeau, who triumphed a month ago at the Us Open, as well as Francesco Molinari, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, Victor Hovland and Tyrell Hatton.
The new champion of The Open will be clear at the end of Sunday. | BGNES
