Lille presented the biggest surprise since the start of the Champions League. The French side unexpectedly prevailed over reigning trophy holders Real Madrid 1:0 at home in a second-round match of the league phase.
Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe returned to action, albeit from the bench, but the Spanish giants were again unable to win after a 1:1 draw with Atletico in the city derby last weekend. Jonathan David scored for Lille from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, and Carlo Ancelotti's Real could never find an answer after the break, when the Spanish team also picked up five yellow cards. Thus, the two teams are tied with three points each, taking 17th and 18th place in the standings.
However, Juventus collected an asset of six points after achieving a valuable comeback victory over RB Leipzig 3:2 away. Benjamin Seško gave the Bulls the lead after half an hour of play, but at the beginning of the second half, Dusan Vlahović equalized for the Turin side. This was followed by a red card for the goalkeeper of the Italian great Michele Di Gregorio, and Sesko scored again for the Germans. Juve, however, reached the three points despite the numerical advantage of the rival after the precise interventions of Vlahovic and Francisco Conceição, who entered the match earlier. For RB Leipzig this is the second defeat in a row in the tournament.
There was also joy for Aston Villa. The team from Birmingham inflicted their first defeat on Bayern Munich under head coach Vincent Kompany after a 1:0 win. Pau Torres had a goal disallowed before the break for offside, but nothing could stop Colombian striker Jhon Duran in the 79th minute. In the end, the home goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez preserved the three points for Unai Emery's side with some wonderful saves.
