British musician Liam Payne, a former member of boy band One Direction, has died in Argentina at the age of 31, police in Buenos Aires said.
"Liam James Payne, songwriter and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo," police said in a statement.
The singer suffered "very serious injuries, incompatible with life, as a result of the fall," Alberto Crescenti, head of the city's emergency medical service SAME, told local television.
He added that "there is no possibility of resuscitation", AFP reported.
Crescenti said emergency workers rushed to the Casa Sur hotel in the capital's Palermo district after a call was made to an emergency services telephone at 5.04pm local time.
They arrived seven minutes later and "ascertained the death of this man, who we later learned was a singer".
The One Direction sensation emerged in 2010 when then-teens Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik appeared on British TV competition "X Factor".
In 2016, the group announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus, but did not split.
That same year, Payne announced he was working on a solo album, following in the footsteps of the other band members.
According to Billboard magazine, on October 2 he attended a concert by his former bandmate Joran in Buenos Aires. | BGNES
