Leverkusen's 35 match unbeaten Bundesliga run comes to an end against RB Leipzig

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first loss in the German Bundesliga after losing to RB Leipzig 2:3 at home in a match of the second round of the championship.

The champions took a 2:0 lead after goals from Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo, after Bulls head coach Marco Rose was sent off with two quick yellow cards earlier. Deep into added time, however, Kevin Kampl restored Leipzig's hopes. After the break came the Lois Openda show. The Belgian international first leveled the score and then shocked the hosts with his second goal of the game in the 80th minute. By the end, the Aspirins were unable to react in their typical style.

In this way, Leipzig ended the opponent's streak of 35 consecutive matches without defeat in the Bundesliga, or in other words a whole 462 days without a loss in the top football echelon of Germany. Xabi Alonso's Bayer fell a game short of Hamburg's feat in the 1982-83 season.

Leipzig also climbed to the top of the standings with a full asset of six points. Leverkusen remain on three after their dramatic win over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the opener. In the next round, the champions will look for revenge away to Hoffenheim, while Rose's men host Union Berlin. | BGNES
