Lavrov: Russia backs China on the Taiwan question

In the essay, published in the government-run Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper, Sergei Lavrov also praised Beijing's approach to the war in Ukraine and said the two countries want to eliminate the problems that Moscow believes are at the root of the conflict.

Writing on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and China, Lavrov said Moscow and Beijing hold close positions "in assessing the risks associated with the West's advance in the Asia-Pacific region."

"The United States and its satellites are deliberately exacerbating the situation in the Taiwan Strait," Lavrov wrote.

"In violation of the 'One China' principle, which they recognize, they are strengthening their ties with the administration on the island. Russia's position on the Taiwan issue is unwavering support for China's territorial integrity, expressed at various levels, including at the highest," Lavrov said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly vowed to bring democratically ruled Taiwan under Beijing's control, by force if necessary. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's claim to sovereignty, saying only the island's people can decide its future.

Xi said in a speech this week that Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory, while vowing to "resolutely oppose any separatist activities aimed at Taiwan's 'independence'". He added that "complete national reunification (with Taiwan) is an irresistible trend," the official Xinhua news agency reported.

U.S. President Joe Biden days ago approved $567 million to support Taiwan's defense, and Washington remains Taiwan's most important international supporter and arms supplier even in the absence of formal diplomatic ties. China has repeatedly demanded that Washington stop selling arms to Taipei.

In his comments to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Lavrov said the security system in Europe and Euro-Atlantic affairs had been "completely discredited" by the US and NATO. He called for a "new Eurasian security architecture" based on the principle of "regional solutions to regional problems."

Lavrov praised China's "balanced and consistent" approach to the two-and-a-half-year war in Ukraine and said its initiatives rightly called for eliminating its root causes, including NATO's eastward expansion and the creation of an "anti-Russian military beachhead in Ukraine."

China and Brazil are promoting a peace plan centred on a conference to which both Ukraine and Russia will be invited. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the offer, providing his own "victory plan" as well as Kiev's insistence that Ukraine's 1991 post-Soviet borders be restored | BGNES
