Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pushed for the creation of a Palestinian state while commenting on the situation in Gaza during his annual press conference, CNN reported.
"The main thrust of efforts must be the creation of a Palestinian state in full compliance with the decisions of the Security Council - a state that, as written in those decisions, will exist in conditions of security and good neighborliness together with Israel, with the other countries in the region Lavrov pointed out.
"Without that, whatever happens, we will see a recurrence of the violence that is now being seen in Gaza, because without the creation of a Palestinian state, the Palestinian people will continue to feel disadvantaged, will continue to live in conditions of inferiority justice", said the Russian first diplomat.
He said he "hopes the Israeli state will eventually come to that conclusion," but also said he understands it is "unacceptable to Israel at this time."
"We cannot do anything other than explain it to them," argued the foreign minister.
Lavrov then urged that mediation efforts by the US would not bear fruit if there was no "direct dialogue between the Palestinians and the Israelis".
"Let's assume that, so to speak, 'old men' somewhere will agree on how the Palestinians will continue to live, and then present it to them. That will not succeed. Only direct dialogue, which should be restored," said the head of Russian diplomacy./BGNES
