Atlético Madrid secured an important victory in a match of the seventh round of the Spanish La Liga, after prevailing over Celta with 1-0 away.
Julián Alvarez, who came from the bench, became a hero for Atleti. The 24-year-old former Manchester City striker replaced Koke early in the second half and lived up to head coach Diego Simeone's trust in him with a 90th-minute strike. Antoine Griezmann assisted on the winning goal.
So Atleti warmed up properly for the city derby with champions Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night. The team is third with 15 points, two behind Carlo Ancelotti's men. Celta are in tenth position with 9 points, still without a draw in the campaign. In their next match, the team from Vigo hosts Girona.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Villarreal beat Espanyol 2-1 away, while Las Palmas and Betis drew 1-1 in the Canary Islands. | BGNES
