Euro 2024 tournament director Philipp Lahm hopes the competition will "bring people together" in times of conflict on the Old Continent. The 2014 world champion said in an interview that the real test of the success of the tournament is "when I feel more solidarity in our society, in Germany and in Europe".
Former full-back Lahm played at the 2006 World Cup when the Germans last hosted a major international tournament. He admitted that social influence was one of the main motivating factors in his decision to take up the post.
"When I went back to the home World Cup in 2006 and what that tournament brought to our country, it was clear to me that it was a big risk, a privilege. I wanted to organize a tournament that reflects the times we live in. It means social sustainability, bringing people together to celebrate ourselves and our shared values. Around a given tournament, a city can do a lot to show what it stands for. The European can be used to demonstrate our democratic, European values", Lahm began, adding: "I hope that the European championship will lead again at least to a more united Germany."
The Bundesteam has won three games and drawn one in four friendlies this year, giving the home supporters cause for optimism. "Obviously it helps when the German team plays exciting football...after the disappointing results recently, the team was under pressure. Now, given the good recent matches, it feels like the fans are enthusiastic and euphoric", the tournament director of the European added.
Germany open their campaign against Scotland on Friday at 22:00 Bulgarian time. "A good start is very important. For the atmosphere, and, of course, for the team. If you get three points in the first game, it gives you security and will cause even more euphoria. I get goosebumps when I think about the opening bout. I am absolutely convinced that we will see a successful European Championship", concluded the 40-year-old Lahm. | BGNES
