The Kremlin has warned that the deployment of US missiles in Germany could turn European capitals into targets for Russian missiles.
Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov spoke of a "paradox" in which "Europe is a target for our missiles, and our country is a target for American missiles in Europe."
"We have sufficient capacity to intercept these missiles, but the potential victims are the capitals of these countries," he told Russian state television channel Rossiya 1.
Peskov also argued that such a confrontation could undermine Europe as a whole - in the same way that the Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
"Europe is falling apart. Europe is not living its best moment. With a different configuration, the repetition of history is inevitable," he said.
At the NATO summit, the White House announced that from 2026 it would periodically deploy long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, to Germany as a deterrent.
"Exercising these advanced capabilities will demonstrate the United States' commitment to NATO and its contribution to European integrated deterrence," US officials said. I BGNES
