North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was piloting a "new-type main battle tank" during military exercises, state media said.
Dressed in a black leather jacket, Kim greeted ranks of soldiers in camouflage uniforms and watched a live-fire training march from a field command post flanked by senior generals. After inspecting the tank crews, Kim "entered a new-type main battle tank, grabbed the control stick and drove the tank himself," the official Korean Central News Agency said.
Her announcement comes as Seoul and Washington hold the final day of their annual Freedom Shield exercises, which include missile interception and air strike drills, among other exercises to maintain combat readiness.
Kim "expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the new type of main battle tank has successfully demonstrated its very excellent strike power," the statement added. The North Korean leader also stressed "the importance of the role and duty of tank operators in modern warfare" as well as "the need to organize intensive exercises simulating real war".
Last week, Pyongyang warned that the South and the US would pay a "heavy price" for the Freedom Shield drills and later announced that Kim had led a large-scale artillery exercise involving a unit it said was capable of hitting the South Korean capital . /BGNES
