Italy won the Billie Jean King Cup unofficial women's tennis world championship after defeating Slovakia 2-0 in the final of the competition in Malaga, Spain.
The Italians' success saw this year's in-form Jasmine Paolini crush Rebecca Sramkova 6-2, 6-1 to close out the match. Before that, in the first singles match, Lucia Brondzetti beat Viktoria Hrunchakova. "It's amazing, extraordinary. I have no words to describe how I feel. We played great all week, I'm proud of the team. I'm glad we were able to bring the title back to Italy," commented Paolini, who ends the year in fourth place in world rankings after reaching two Grand Slam finals during the season.
For Italy, this is the fifth triumph in the "Billie Jean King Cup" and the first since 2013. Last year, the Italian women lost in the final to Canada. | BGNES
