Jannick Siner won his second Grand Slam title in 2024, defeating Taylor Fritz in the US Open final and dashing American hopes of a first men's major champion in 21 years.
World number one Sinner, who won his first Slam at the Australian Open in January, became the first Italian to triumph in New York with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory.
For the 23-year-old Sinner, it was the 55th game won of the season and the sixth title.
After his 21-year-old rival Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon titles and increased his collection of majors to four, the two men cemented their positions as the two powerhouses in tennis' new era.
"This title means so much," said Sinner, who arrived in New York under the sign of hardship after it emerged he had failed two doping tests but avoided a sanction.
"The last period of my career has not been easy, but I have my team and family supporting me. I love tennis but there is life off the court too and I want to dedicate this trophy to my aunt because she is not well and I don't know how much longer I will have her in my life. She was a very important part of my life and still is. It's nice to share that with her," he added.
World No. 12 Fritz was hoping to become the first American since Andy Roddick in New York in 2003 to win a Grand Slam title.
He was supported by A-list stars in a crowd of 23,000 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Pop queen Taylor Swift watched the game with boyfriend and NFL star Travis Kelce, and Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey was hard to miss as he sported a Stars and Stripes headband.
"It's been an amazing two weeks. Congratulations to Yannick, he played a great game. He was very impressive and he was too good today," Fritz said. | BGNES
