Jack Black to play Steve in the Minecraft movie

Production on the Warner Bros/Vertigo/Legendary feature film based on Mojang/Microsoft's Minecraft is about to begin and sources have reported that Jack Black is joining the cast of the film with Jason Momoa, Deadline reports.

Minecraft also stars Emma Myers, Daniel Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The title from Mojang's sandbox game is the best-selling video game of all time with 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players.

The Minecraft film is the work of Vertigo, co-financier Legendary, Mojang/Microsoft and Momoa's On the Roam. It is directed by Jared Hess. Producers include Roy Lee, John Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boiter, Momoa, Torfi France Olafsson, Wu Bui and the late Jill Messick. EPs are Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts.

Black played the role of villain Bowser in the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, Illumination and Universal's Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $1.36 billion worldwide. Black recently scored his third Golden Globe nomination, this time for co-writing the love ballad "Peaches" from the film, which he also performed. /BGNES
