Israeli tanks entered the center of the southern Gaza city of Rafah. It came two days after an Israeli strike on a camp for displaced people, near Rafah, killed 45 people.
"The Israeli tanks are positioned at the Al-Awda roundabout in the center of Rafah city," a witness reported. A Palestinian security source confirmed that the tanks were in the center of Rafah, where earlier this month Israeli troops launched an attack, AFP reported.
The strike on the camp on May 26, in which Gaza medics said hundreds of civilians suffered shrapnel wounds and burns, drew condemnation from world leaders and was due to be discussed at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
In response, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that "there is no safe place in Gaza" and that "this horror must stop."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strike a "tragic incident," but also vowed to continue the military campaign to destroy Hamas and bring home all the hostages./BGNES
