According to AFP, the Israeli military claimed it had resumed fighting in Gaza, reporting airstrikes and artillery fire in Gaza City as a truce expired with no agreement to prolong it.
"Hamas violated the operational pause and also fired into Israeli territory," according to the Israeli military.
"The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) resumed combat operations against the terrorist organisation Hamas in the Gaza Strip" .
The news came shortly after the military announced that it had intercepted a rocket fired from Gaza, the first from the territory since a rocket was fired minutes after the truce's first day.
According to an AFP journalist, Israeli jets carried out a number of attacks in Gaza, as well as artillery bombardment in Gaza City.
Drones were also heard over the southern half of the region for the first time since the truce's conclusion, according to an AFP reporter in the area.
The resumed fighting has dashed hopes of prolonging the seven-day truce that saw Israel release scores of captives in exchange for Palestinian inmates./BGNES
