The Israeli army bombed military positions and warehouses in several parts of the country last night after Islamist-led rebels ousted President Bashar al-Assad from power.
"From the first hours after the announcement of the fall of the previous regime, Israel began to launch intensive airstrikes, deliberately destroying weapons and ammunition depots," according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Among the targets of the night strikes were "air defence weapons and ammunition depots" belonging to the Syrian army in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus.
Israel has also carried out strikes in the south of the country, targeting Tal al-Hara near the annexed Golan Heights, as well as military positions in Isra, Daraa province.
Additional Israeli strikes destroyed "anti-tank weapons" depots in the Kalamoun area of Damascus province.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in the country, mainly targeting the army and Iranian-backed groups.
The state of Israel rarely comments on individual strikes in Syria, but has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence. | BGNES
