Inter won their 20th championship of Italy after beating city rivals Milan 2:1 in a clash of the 33rd round of the domestic Serie A. The Nerazzurri have thus built up a 17-point lead over the Rossoneri and are out of reach at the top with five rounds to go in the season.
The match started better for Simone Inzaghi's side, who took the lead after 18 minutes of play. Former AC Milan player Francesco Acerbi scored after an assist from Benjamin Pavard. At the start of the second half, the troubles for Stefano Pioli's side increased after Marcus Thuram's accurate intervention.
Inter thought they have already won and were punished ten minutes before the end of regular time when Fikayo Tomori was accurate for Milan. In the end, the Nerazzurri held on to their fragile lead and the match ended in ugly scenes and tension between the two city rivals. It came down to three red cards deep into stoppage time, with two Milan players and one Inter player Theo Hernandez, Davide Calabria and substitute Denzel Dumfries heading to the dressing rooms prematurely.
Thus, Inter legitimately triumphed with the Scudetto for the 20th time in its history, becoming the second team with at least 20 titles after the leader Juventus, who are far ahead with 36. The Nerazzurri will have a second star stitched above the emblem. Milan remain with 19 trophies, and curiously, both clubs have finished in second place 16 times each. Inter also became the first team to win the title after triumphing in the Milan derby.
In their next matches, Inter welcomes Torino, while Milan will visit the third in the table, Juventus.
Elsewhere, Bologna continued their strong run to beat Roma 3:1 at the Olimpico. Oussama El Azzouzi, Joshua Zirkzee and Alexis Saelemaekers were on target for the Serie A surprise of the season, while Sardar Azmoun scored for Wolves. Bologna are fourth with 62 points, seven ahead of fifth-placed Roma, who have a game in hand. Daniele De Rossi's side are a point ahead of Atalanta and three ahead of city rivals Lazio in the battle for fifth place, which will also serve as qualification for next season's Champions League thanks to Italy's high ratio. /BGNES
