Individual records that could be broken at Paris Olympics

The Olympic Games have a history with thousands of athletes from around the world regularly providing fans with spectacle, drama, intrigue and passion.

Here are some of the individual records that can be broken in the French capital:

1. NBA star Kevin Durant can become the first male athlete with four Olympic gold medals in any team sport if USA Basketball wins a fifth consecutive Olympic title on August 10. However, his achievement can be equaled just 24 hours later if France wins the men's handball tournament.

2. Three-time International Handball Federation Player of the Year Nikola Karabatic has played in the last five Olympics, helping his team win the title in Beijing (2008), London (2012) and Tokyo (2021). For Karabatic, it will surely be an emotional farewell to the home crowd as the 40-year-old has already announced his retirement after Paris 2024.

3. You don't have to be a multiple Olympic champion to break records. Jimmer Fredette could make history just by stepping onto the 3x3 court on July 30th. By participating in the Games in the French capital, Fredette will become the first NBA player to compete in the Olympic 3x3 tournament and could even lead the US team to their first Olympic crown in his debut. The final will be on August 5.

4. Seven-time gold medalists Isabelle Werth and Katie Ledecky have the opportunity to make history by winning the most Olympic titles. The current women's record is held by gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won an impressive nine gold medals during her remarkable career. German equestrian star Werth can win two titles to match Latinina, while American swimmer Ledecky can dislodge both from the top spot if she triumphs in three of the four events in which she competes.

5. Moving on to shooting, Nino Salukvadze has the opportunity to extend her record for the most appearances at the Olympics. Paris 2024 will be her tenth appearance at the Olympics, a remarkable feat that has not been achieved by any other woman. The Georgian shooter has not missed a Games since Seoul 1988. Salukvadze has three gold medals to her credit and can also break the record for the first athlete in history to participate in ten consecutive Olympic Games when she appears in the French capital from July 27.
