Indian grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest world chess champion at the age of just 18 after he dethroned Ding Liren of China in the 14th and final game of their thrilling clash in Singapore.
The final game between the two was heading for a draw, but Gukesh eventually emerged victorious, winning 7.5 points to Liren's 6.5.
Before Gukesh's historic achievement, the legend Garry Kasparov held the record for the youngest world champion when he took the title at the age of 22 after dethroning Anatoly Karpov in 1985.
Gukesh had entered the final battle as the youngest contender for the world crown after winning the Candidates Tournament earlier this year. He is the second Indian to win the world title after Viswanathan Anand. Anand is a five-time world champion and last won the crown in 2012. | BGNES
