Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar gave the first official confirmation that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina is on the territory of India, reported AFP.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh after failing to deal with the month-long bloody protests.
"We will naturally remain deeply concerned until law and order is visibly restored in Bangladesh," Jaishankar said in an address to parliament.
Bangladesh army chief General Waqer-Uz-Zaman announced on August 5 on state television that Hasina had resigned and the military would form an interim government.
"In the last 24 hours, we have also been in regular contact with the authorities in Dhaka," said India's top diplomat.
Hasina fled Bangladesh by helicopter to India, arriving at an air base near New Delhi.
A senior source said she wanted to "cross over" to London, but calls by the British government for a UN-led inquiry into the "unprecedented levels of violence" cast doubt on that.
"Our understanding is that after a meeting with the leaders of the security services, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has apparently decided to resign," Jaishankar said.
"At very short notice, she requested approval to come to India for the time being. At the same time, we received a request for a flight permit from the Bangladeshi authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi," the Indian foreign minister said.
India shares a border with Bangladesh that is over 4,000 km long.
"Our border security forces have also been instructed to be extremely vigilant in view of this complex situation," Jaishankar said. | BGNES
