Hundreds of thousands welcomed the New Year with an unprecedented show on the Champs-Elysées

Over 800,000 people gathered on Paris' most famous boulevard to celebrate the new year and enjoy the giant fireworks. Crowd control was a test of the security protocol that will be in place for the Olympics, which Paris is hosting this year.

Locals and tourists enjoyed a unique festive New Year's Eve with DJs and performers, and at midnight the Arc de Triomphe was illuminated with Olympic-themed images.

Artists have performed for the people at the base of the Eiffel Tower, including Chimène Badi, Grand Corps Malade, Patrick Bruel, Gazo Vitaa et Slimane.

Around 6,000 police officers were deployed in the French capital, implementing a security protocol similar to that which will be used during this summer's Olympics.

The security perimeter was closed to vehicles and the sale of alcohol was prohibited. Police confiscated alcohol and any items deemed to be potential weapons.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen said there had been few serious incidents during regular police patrols along the boulevard, with 211 people arrested in the evening. /BGNES
