Hugh Grant has revealed he has been "cast" in the new Bridget Jones movie, despite there being "no obvious role" for him.
'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy' will be the fourth film in the series and will be released on Valentine's Day next year. The film is based on the 2013 book of the same name and follows Bridget Jones in her life as a newly single mother of two trying to navigate the modern dating world.
Films based on the books by Independent journalist Helen Fielding achieved unprecedented success and garnered an Oscar nomination for Zellweger in the 2000s and 2010s.
The original cast included Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver and Colin Firth as Mark Darcy.
There have been rumors that Grant and Firth may also star in the new film. Grant confirmed his involvement in an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year.
Now, the actor has admitted that he was written into the story even though his role originally made sense.
"It's a good and touching script - extremely funny, but also very sad. There was no obvious role for me, but they put me in the film. So we don't have a 60-year-old Daniel Cleaver walking around looking at young girls, I came up with a good story for him," he said on the Graham Norton Show on October 3.
Grant hasn't appeared in the 2004 sequel, "Bridget Jones: On the Edge of Reason."
"I really couldn't get into my character - he just didn't belong, so I pulled out," the actor explained.
He had also initially turned down a part in the fourth film in the series, claiming "they did something I didn't like".
However, after managing to write "some scenes" into the film, he decided to get involved.
"It's absolutely the best (book) and I think it's very funny and very, very moving. I'm not in a lot of scenes, I did the work in a week, that's it. But when you see the movie, you'll be very excited," Grant pointed out.
It looks like Firth won't be returning for the sequel as his character isn't in the books, however it's unclear if the film will stick to them. | BGNES
