On 23 September, Israel launched a bombing campaign targeting Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.
The Lebanese group Hezbollah announced that it had achieved a "victory" over Israel and that its fighters were on standby as a ceasefire between the two sides took effect, AFP reported.
"The victory by God Almighty was an ally of the just cause," the Iran-backed group said. Hezbollah added that its fighters "will remain in full readiness to deal with the ambitions of the Israeli enemy and its attacks."
On September 23, Israel launched a bombing campaign targeting Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon and later sent in ground troops after more than a year of cross-border exchanges of fire.
During the conflict, Israel dealt heavy blows to the group, including killing longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah and other senior officials.
The Hezbollah statement said Israeli forces had failed in their "attempts ... to occupy and establish themselves in any of the towns", prevent cross-border Hezbollah attacks or "establish a military buffer and security zone as the enemy had hoped".
The group added that its fighters attacked Israel "until the last day of aggression."
The ceasefire agreement requires Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River, about 30km from the border with Israel, and to remove its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. | BGNES
