Spain closed schools and evacuated residents due to heavy rains that lashed the country on November 13. Two weeks earlier, the worst floods in a generation claimed the lives of more than 200 people, AFP reported.
The national meteorological service AEMET has placed the southern province of Malaga and the northeastern region of Catalonia under red alert, the highest level, because of the heavy rain. They are expected to last until November 15.
The service predicts that up to 180mm of rain could fall there in just 12 hours.
Lighter heavy rains are also expected in the flood-affected region of Valencia. However, local authorities have warned that since the sewage systems are clogged with mud, they can hardly cope.
The October 29 storm killed 223 people, mainly in the Valencia region, destroyed infrastructure, gutted buildings and flooded fields. The final bill is expected to reach tens of billions of euros.
"We have nothing left to lose," Carlos Molto, a resident of the Picaña suburb in the city of Valencia, told local TV station A Punt. | BGNES
