A health guru has sounded the alarm about the hidden sugar content in tomato ketchup, revealing the surprising amount contained in each bottle, the Mirror reports.
Using the popular Heinz brand as an example, British TikTok user Suna van Kampen, founder of Tonic Health, took a 700-gram bottle of the famous sauce and posed a question to her 394,000 followers: 'Have you ever checked how much sugar is in a bottle of Heinz ketchup? That's pretty shocking. It's time to look twice at what we add to our plates."
In an attempt to reinforce his message, he pulled out a kitchen scale and began piling on sugar cubes until they tipped the scale at the same number of grams of sugar contained in the ketchup.
"I'm going to show you what this looks like because that's 39 teaspoons of sugar. That's so much you're adding to your diet on a daily basis without even knowing it," Kampen said.
He then demonstrated what that amount of sugar would look like in a bottle without the other ketchup components. "It's actually 159 grams of sugar," he clarified - a staggering 23 percent of the sauce's total weight.
The health guru concluded with a tip:"It's not good to add sugar to your food. Find one (ketchup - ed.) without added sugar - there are options."
One of Suna's fans reacted in disbelief, "Shocking," while another could only utter a stunned "No!" A third complained, "Leave the ketchup alone!"
However, other TikTok users were quick to shrug off the health warning about the ketchup's sugar content, with one saying:
"It's okay, we only consume a little, not the whole bottle."
Another insisted: "But you don't consume the whole bottle, you have a small amount of sauce."
In response to concerns about the sugar and salt content, Heinz is offering a healthier alternative - a no-salt, no-sugar-added version of its classic condiment that offers 50% less sugar and salt than the standard bottle. The Heinz website is proud to announce:
"Try 50% less sugar and salt (with sweetener from a natural source) or organic tomato ketchup - all with the irresistible Heinz taste you know and love!".
"Now enjoy the irresistible taste of Heinz tomato ketchup without added sugar and salt - a healthier alternative for those who want to completely eliminate added sugar and salt from foods. With absolutely no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, no other ketchup tastes like it," the company added.
"Our Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar & Salt and Heinz Tomato Ketchup 50% Less Sugar & Salt offer shoppers a healthier alternative to their favorite condiment without compromising on taste. Such innovations are part of our company's larger goal to reduce the total amount of sugar in our products by more than 60 million pounds by 2025," said a Heinz spokesperson. | BGNES
