Hamas, Qatar and US envoys in Cairo for talks on Gaza

Delegations from Hamas, Qatar and the US have arrived in Egypt for a "new round of talks" on a Gaza ceasefire, state-affiliated Al-Qahera News reported.

Cairo, Doha and Washington brokered weeks of talks aimed at ending fighting in the nearly five-month-old war between Israel and Hamas, sparked by the Oct. 7 attack on the Jewish state. Their aim was to secure a truce by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan next week, but hopes have been dashed by a series of failed talks. The talks centered on a proposal to stop fighting for 6 weeks and for Hamas to release hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails and greater aid supplies. /BGNES, AFP
