Hamas accuses US and UK of fomenting 'further chaos'

The Palestinian militant group Hamas on Sunday condemned a wave of US and British strikes on Yemen, warning that the attacks would lead to "further chaos" in the Middle East.

Hamas, in a statement, called the bombing of Houthi rebel targets "an open attack on the sovereignty of a sister Arab country and an escalation that will plunge the region into further turmoil."
The US and Britain struck dozens of targets in Yemen late on Saturday, their third joint operation in response to repeated attacks on shipping in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthis that have disrupted global trade.

The airstrikes in Yemen came a day after a separate wave of unilateral US strikes against Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for the January 28 killing of three US soldiers in Jordan.

Anger against Israel's devastating campaign in Gaza, sparked by Hamas's unprecedented Oct. 7 attack on Israel, has grown across the Middle East, fueling violence involving groups linked to Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Khanani earlier accused the US and Britain of "fostering chaos, disorder, insecurity and instability" by supporting Israel. He said the strikes on Yemen were "in stark contrast to repeated statements by Washington and London that they do not want the war and conflict to expand in the region." /BGNES, AFP
