UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemns the events that led to the deaths of around 100 people, according to Hamas, during a food aid distribution that turned into a nightmare in Gaza, his spokesman said, AFP reports.
"We don't know exactly what happened. But whether these people were killed by Israeli fire, whether they were run over by a mob, or whether they were run over by trucks, these are acts of violence somehow related to this conflict," said Stephane Dujarric, describing the deaths in "horrific circumstances."
He pointed out that there was no UN presence at the aid distribution.
"Desperate civilians in Gaza need urgent help, including the besieged in the north of the country, where the UN has been unable to deliver aid for more than a week," he noted, echoing Antonio Guterres' call for an immediate ceasefire.
The Secretary-General is also "appalled“ by the tragic human toll of the conflict in Gaza, which has already claimed more than 30,000 lives and left 70,000 injured. It is tragic that an unknown number of people are under the rubble," he concluded. / BGNES
