Guardiola to extend his contract as Manchester City manager

Pep Guardiola has agreed a new one-year contract with Manchester City, Sky Sports reports. The new deal includes an option for an additional season until 2027. The English champions have declined to comment on the media report.

The Athletic reports that official confirmation is expected in the coming days. The 53-year-old Spaniard's current contract expires at the end of this season. If he re-signs with City, Guardiola will have spent a decade in charge of The Citizens after arriving at the Etihad in the summer of 2016. Guardiola has 18 trophies with The Sky Blues, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy.

Speculation about Guardiola's future is not new. The club has already parted ways with long-time sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who was instrumental in Pep's arrival at the Etihad eight years ago. Many pundits expected Guardiola to follow him after the end of the campaign. Begiristain will be replaced in the position by former Newcastle player and until recently working for Sporting Lisbon Hugo Viana.

The news of Guardiola's new contract comes at a time when the team is having problems and is on a streak of four consecutive losses in all competitions - something that happened for the first time in Pep's coaching career. The club is also facing court on charges of 115 financial violations. A decision is expected in the first half of 2025.
