The Greek government has revealed plans for specific measures aimed at tackling hooliganism and disorder during sports events. One key initiative involves the introduction of a digital identification system for the purchase of tickets to sporting activities.
Recent years have witnessed various incidents in the country, including fatal occurrences. Stringent measures include the deployment of high-resolution cameras in stadiums and venues, along with the potential closure of sports facilities if objects are thrown onto the field. Greek supporters are notorious for utilizing pyrotechnics, some of which have reached the playing field and players.
While expressing a reluctance to close stadiums, Deputy Minister of Sports Yanis Vrutsis declared that matches may be held without an audience if regulations are not adhered to. In December, a police officer lost his life after being struck by a flare during a volleyball match in Athens, adding to the two incidents with fatalities that occurred the previous year.
The electronic identification system is expected to be operational by early April. /BGNES
