Girona defeated Barcelona 4:2 in a city derby from the 34th round of the Spanish La Liga. With their victory over the Catalans and the win of leaders Real Madrid over Cádiz 3:0 at home before that, the Royal club became the country's champions for a record 36th time.
After the Real's classic win over Cádiz, the accounts indicated that Real would celebrate with the title with a draw or a win for Girona over the now former champions. The clash started with quickly exchanged goals. Andreas Christensen opened the scoring for the visitors in the 3rd minute after an assist from Lamine Yamal, but Artem Dovbyk soon equalized. At the end of the first half, Robert Lewandowski restored Barca's lead from the penalty spot. After the break, however, Xavi and company conceded three goals in the space of nine minutes. Two of them were from Portu, and the third was scored by Miguel Gutierrez.
Real were thus crowned La Liga champions for the 36th time, unassailable at the top with a 13-point lead over second-placed Girona with four rounds to go. Carlo Ancelotti's side now have nine trophies ahead of second-placed Barcelona in the all-time table. This is the third title for the Royals in the last five seasons.
Barca were displaced by Girona from second place in the table by one point. Girona will play in the Champions League for the first time in their history from the next campaign.
Real has a semifinal rematch with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, May 8, at 10:00 p.m. Bulgarian time. The first clash between the two giants at the Allianz Arena ended in a 2:2 draw. /BGNES
