Germany will bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036 or 2040

Germany plans to bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036 or 2040, Interior Minister Nancy Feser said.

Feser, whose ministry also includes sports, made the announcement at the annual conference of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, citing Paris, which hosted the Games in 2024, as a positive example. "After the Olympics, all 38,000 primary schools in France will practice at least one hour of sports a day. Sports unite society. Sports teach values. Sports are educational," she said, adding that playing sports significantly enhances children's cognitive abilities.

The German Olympic Committee plans to discuss with the IOC a possible bid for the 2036 or 2040 Olympics during the IOC session on January 30 in Lausanne, Switzerland. "We will present which regions are planning to participate in the competition and we will receive guidance and strategies from the IOC. What can we do better? What do we need to give the regions and cities so that they can bid in a meaningful way," explained German Olympic Committee President Thomas Weikert.

Germany last hosted the Olympics at the 1972 Munich Games. Munich planned to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Hamburg for the 2024 Summer Olympics, but both bids were withdrawn after a referendum. | BGNES
