Germany arrests people from a notorious far-left gang

German police arrested two men in Berlin during a manhunt for two members of the far-left Baader-Meinhof armed gang who had been on the run for more than 30 years.

It remained unclear whether the two men detained were Ernst-Volker Staub, 69, and Burkhard Garweg, 55, of the radical anti-capitalist group also known as the Red Army Faction (RAF).

The search for the two men has intensified in recent days following the arrest on Monday of 65-year-old Daniela Klett, the third member of the long-wanted RAF trio who carried out several bombings, kidnappings and murders that traumatized Germany in the 1970s and somewhat 1980s. those years of the last century.

"It was shot in connection with the opening of a door, no one was injured," police spokeswoman Ulrike Trumtrar told AFP.

"Two men have been provisionally arrested in connection with this but their identities need to be verified," she said.

She added that she could not elaborate on whether the couple fell within the age group of the two fugitives. But photos published by Bild every day since the arrests show that the two detainees are younger than Garweg and Staub.

Since the RAF disbanded in 1998, Clett and the two fugitives were believed to have funded their lives by robbing money carriers and stealing money from supermarkets. Klett, the only woman designated as "dangerous" on Europol's most wanted list, was arrested Monday in Berlin on suspicion of attempted murder and various serious robberies between 1999 and 2016. Following her arrest, police believe the others two fugitives are also hiding in the German capital. On Saturday, police also released new photos that they believe are likely recent photos of Garweg. Among the photos, believed to have been taken between 2021 and 2024, is a photo of a suspected fugitive sitting between two dogs on a sofa. According to the police, "it cannot be ruled out" that Garweg and Klett had "personal and direct" contact. /BGNES, AFP
