Georgian MPs fight over 'foreign influence' law

Clashes erupted in the Georgian parliament over the government's re-introduction of a controversial "foreign influence" bill. Critics say such legislation allows the Kremlin to silence and intimidate dissidents, AFP reported.
The ruling Georgian Dream party announced the proposal earlier this month, reviving a similar bill that was withdrawn a year ago after mass protests.
A video from a parliamentary hearing showed an opposition lawmaker head-butting a ruling party lawmaker. This led to clashes and disruption of the live broadcast.
The clash came as dozens of Georgians protested outside parliament against the proposed law, which they say undermines Georgia's bid for EU membership.
Before the planned rally for the evening, protesters were seen waving a large EU flag and shouting: "No to Russian law!".
For years, Georgia has sought to deepen its relations with the West, but the current ruling party has been accused of trying to reconnect the former Soviet republic with Russia./BGNES
