Coco Gauff found a place in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. The 4th seeded American went through after opponent Naomi Osaka retired after one set apiece - 3-6, 6-4. The two sets were played in about an hour and a half.
In the first set, the two were very shaky and in the end, after a total of five breaks, the four-time Grand Slam champion came away with a 6-3. The second set was also very unpredictable and after early breaks, Osaka came close to winning after a 4-3 break and serve. However, Gauff returned the break and then made another for 6-4.
Osaka then prematurely pulled out of the bout due to injury. So Gauff moves on to the last eight, where she will play one of the surprises of the tournament – 115th-ranked Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva, who eliminated 10th-seeded Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
In the other clear quarter-final in the lower half of the draw, world No. 595 Shuai Zhang will face No. 15 seed Paula Badosa, who upset No. 2 seed and US Open finalist Jessica Pegula 6 -4, 6-0. | BGNES
