Garnacho in hot water for using 'racist' emoji under Onana photo

Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho has come under fire and could be fined by the Football Association after being accused of using a racist emoji under a photo of the Red Devils' black goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Onana was the hero for his side on Tuesday, saving a 97th-minute penalty to earn a valuable 1-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League. On the social network, X Garnacho published a photo of Onana, and below it two gorilla emojis. After receiving comments that it was racist, the 19-year-old deleted his post and has been contacted by the FA for an explanation. The Argentinian player received support from Onana himself. "People cannot choose what should offend me. I know very well what Garnacho meant - strength and power. This matter must be closed," the Cameroonian guard wrote.

However, it is not exceptional for Garnacho to be punished by the FA. At the end of 2019, Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva was banned for one match and fined £50,000 after comparing his teammate Benjamin Mendy to a drawing of a monkey. In 2020, Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three matches and fined £100,000 after he wrote "Gracias, negrito" to thank a fan on Twitter. /BGNES
