Game of Thrones film in early development phase

Could the dragons of Westeros finally be coming to the big screen?

At least one "Game of Thrones" movie is in the very early stages of development, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported Thursday.

HBO's original TV series "Game of Thrones" became a global cultural phenomenon during its eight seasons from 2011-2019, garnering huge audiences and a record 59 Emmy Awards.

Based on the fantasy novel series by George R. Р. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice, the hit series about cruel, feuding noble families has already spawned a TV spinoff, Home of the Dragon, with more adaptations confirmed to be in the works for the small screen.

But while Martin and "Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have discussed potential films based on the universe in the past, parent company Warner Bros Discovery is opposed to bringing the franchise to cinemas.

Recent changes in studio leadership and the success of franchises that have bounced between the big and small screen, such as Batman, Dune and the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, may have finally prompted a change.

Warner Bros. is "quietly developing at least one film" set in the "Thrones" universe, the outlet reports.

Deadline claims there have only been "preliminary discussions" and no stars have yet been tied to the proposed film. | BGNES
