French police have arrested a man suspected of causing an explosion at a synagogue in southern France, the country's interior minister said.
"The suspected perpetrator of the crime has been arrested," Gerald Darmanen wrote on the X social network.
On August 24, two cars were set on fire near the Beth Yaakov Synagogue in La Motte. One of the cars exploded and injured a policeman.
Both Darmanen and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal went to the site of the explosion. The explosion was probably caused by a gas cylinder in one of the cars, police said.
La Motte, which has about 8,500 inhabitants, is a popular seaside resort visited by over 100,000 tourists each year.
Darmanen said earlier this month that the government had registered 887 anti-Semitic acts in France in the first half of 2024, almost three times as many as in the same period in 2023. | BGNES
