France warned of danger of civil war in Lebanon

"Our position at the moment is mainly based on the fear of an imminent civil war in Lebanon," Lekornu told the LCI television channel.

French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu warned of the danger of Lebanon's disintegration and the risk of an "imminent civil war."

"Our position at the moment is mainly based on the fear of an imminent civil war in Lebanon," Lekornu told the LCI television channel.

In support, he cited the displaced population, the "very strong interfaith dynamics" and "the weakening of Hezbollah, which is good news, there is no denying it."

"But you can see that Lebanon could collapse completely, even more than it has already collapsed," the French minister added.

Apart from humanitarian issues, the international conference on Lebanon, scheduled for 24 October in Paris, aims to provide the Lebanese army with the means to "guarantee Lebanon's sovereignty".

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has indicated that he intends to ask for "security assistance" at this conference, relating to "everything that concerns the army and the internal security forces".

Regarding the UN Interim Force (UNIFIL) "blue helmets", Sebastian Lekornu regretted that "security measures that are essential for operations are not always taken by the IDF (Israeli army)". | BGNES
