France vows new migration rules after student murder

French Interior Minister Bruno Retaio has vowed there will be consequences after a Moroccan man who allegedly killed a 19-year-old university student was arrested in Switzerland, AFP reports.

A source close to the case identified the suspect as a 22-year-old man of Moroccan nationality. Prosecutors say the suspect had previously been convicted of rape and had been ordered to leave France.

The killing of the student is expected to further inflame political tensions in France, where the newly appointed government plans to crack down on immigration.

"This is a heinous crime," Retaillot said.

He promised to increase law and order, tighten immigration laws and make it easier to deport foreigners convicted of crimes.
"It is up to us as public leaders to refuse to accept the inevitable and to develop our legal arsenal to protect the French. If we have to change the rules, let's change them," the minister added.

On 21 September, the body of a student was found in Boulogne Park in western Paris, not far from Paris-Dauphine University.

Authorities are releasing only the victim's first name - Filipina.

A Moroccan national was arrested in the Swiss canton of Geneva on 24 September and identified as a suspect in the Paris murder, a spokesman for the Swiss justice ministry said.

"The Federal Office of Justice then ordered detention for extradition on the basis of an arrest request from France," the spokesman added. | BGNES
