France enshrined the right to abortion in its constitution

The French parliament voted to include the right to abortion in the constitution. Thus, France has become the first country in the world to offer explicit protection for termination of pregnancy in its basic law, reported AFP.

The two houses of the parliament easily found the necessary 3/5 majority for the change, with 780 MPs voting "for" and 72 - "against".

The MPs applauded the change with shouts and thunderous applause.

President Emmanuel Macron described the move as "French pride" that sent a "universal message", and a special public ceremony is planned in Paris on International Women's Day on March 8 to mark the move.

The Eiffel Tower was lit up in celebration after the change was adopted, flashing slogans including "My body, my choice".

"This is a fundamental step... A step that will go down in history," Prime Minister Gabriel Atal told lawmakers, urging them to pass the law.

He stated that they have a "moral duty" to all women who suffered before the legalization of abortion./BGNES
