France deployed troops to New Caledonia

France has deployed troops, imposed a curfew and banned TikTok in the riot-hit Pacific territory of New Caledonia, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced.

"Soldiers from the armed forces have been sent to secure New Caledonia's ports and airport," Attal told a crisis ministerial meeting in Paris. The territory's high commissioner, Louis Le Franc, who requested troops, "announced a curfew and banned TikTok," Attal said.
Riots in the Pacific archipelago flared after the French parliament approved controversial reforms related to the conduct of elections there. Paris's decision angered supporters of New Caledonia's independence.

The reforms give thousands of French citizens the right to vote in the territory's local elections. The movement that supports the independence of New Caledonia fears that these changes will weaken the political influence of representatives of the indigenous population. /BGNES, AFP
