France and Italy launch project to exchange information on migrant smuggling

The project will be modelled on a similar agreement between France and the UK launched in 2020 in northern France in a bid to stop attempts to reach the UK.

France's new interior minister, Bruno Retaio, a politician from the conservative Republicans (LR) party who is in charge of policing, said his priority was to further tighten immigration laws, echoing remarks made by the prime minister who said "the country must better control its borders".

Immigration is also a tense domestic political issue in Italy, where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has promised to drastically limit entry into the country but has yet to succeed. | BGNES
